Sebumi Melaut Sumbawa is a collaboration trip with Balepakek, as a journey to explore the depths of Saleh Bay, home to the gentle giants that safeguard the balance of the ecosystem, the whale sharks, while experiencing the life of bagan fishermen who coexist with them, alongside the Balepakek community whose lives are rooted in a deep love for the sea. The blend of marine biodiversity, the warmth of local culture, and traditional fishing practices makes Saleh Bay an unique destination for learning, contemplation, and celebrating the harmony between humans and nature. More than just an adventure, this journey offers a meaningful space for reflection on how marine ecosystems sustain human life, and how humanity, in return, should contribute to their preservation.

Day 1 - Seaside Living while Learning Whale Shark Conservation

Arriving in Sumbawa Besar, participants are heading to Labuhan Jambu Village and will be welcomed with local culinary delights before visiting the Whale Shark Learning Center. Here, we learn about the lives of the ocean’s gentle giants and the challenges of their conservation, while also understanding the role of local communities in protecting the ecosystem. The journey continues to the bagan, where we enjoy the sunset, share a dinner of fresh catch, and spend the first night at sea, embraced by the harmony of waves and starlight.

Day 2 - Join as a Citizen Scientist and Island Hopping

The day begins by joining fishers as they haul in their nets. Then comes a truly special experience: swimming with whale sharks while recording their behavior as part of citizen science. The afternoon is filled with island hopping, picnicking on white sandy beaches, and trying out traditional fishing. As evening falls, participants return to the bagan to lower the nets, before ending the day with a BBQ dinner alongside the fishers, sharing stories and enjoying the beauty of a star-filled sky.

Day 3 - Local Food Taste and Cultural Exploration

The morning begins with helping the fishers haul in their nets, followed by another swim with whale sharks to deepen the conservation experience. Afterwards, participants return to shore and check in at the village accommodation. The afternoon is spent exploring Labuhan Jambu Village, joining a creative workshop to make whale shark-themed crafts, and dancing with the village children. The day ends with a “from sea to table” experience, learning to cook local dishes with the community and sharing a heartfelt farewell meal together.

Day 4 -  Seaside Living

On the last day, we visit the bustling fish market, where the vibrant sights, sounds, and smells open a window into the daily lives of coastal communities. Here, participants can observe and interact with local women and fishers, gaining insight into their traditions, livelihoods, and the vital role they play in sustaining both the community and the sea
