DESCRIPTION

The two villages located in Mount Rinjani, Senaru in North Lombok and Sembalun in East Lombok, are the climbing starting points of Mount Rinjani. The majority of the locals work as porters, guides, homestay owners, and tracking organizers. However, the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic and the series of earthquakes in 2018 have severely affected the communities’ economy. To survive in this tough period, many decide to change their source of income and plant coffee beans.

Senaru and Sembalun are in the highland, giving a chance for Arabica and Robusta beans to grow. The beans are still manually processed from the planting, harvesting, and post-production process, such as packaging. Although the coffee beans have already gone through all those processes, it is not in their greatest form. This happened due to the beans harvested before it turned ripe, identified by the beans' redness. Moreover, the production is still done by using a pan and firewood. Currently,  plastic packaging is also still used and can be changed to eco-packaging, resulting in higher quality coffee beans.

Looking at the prospect of the process of coffee bean farming in Senaru, Sebumi decided to contribute to the locals.  In 2019 and 2021, with the support of the IATSS Forum, Ngoepi, Scopi, and Indonesian Coffee Academy, coffee farmers were trained. The topics include coffee beans plantation to the coffee brewing process. In addition, Sebumi has also donated a roasting machine, two house-scale grinders, and a wet bean pulper. In Sembalun, to support local teachers and children, Sebumi focuses on rebuilding a local learning center, called Rumah Belajar Sangkabira (RBS) affected by the 2018 earthquakes. At the end of 2021, the rebuilding process was completed. The teachers and children can study and learn togetherSebumi will also assist in the construction of the access bridge to RBS and the waste processing facility to process waste that results in invaluable products. Moreover, the teachers will receive waste management training from an expert to produce marketable waste processed products.
